As academics in language-based disciplines in the UK we firmly believe that Britain should remain in the European Union. The entire foundation of our disciplines is in the reaffirmation that, through the study of languages, cultures and societies, we can gain understanding of other cultures and strive to break down barriers between nations. Membership of the EU is fundamental to these principles, not least to enable greater mobility of all members of our society across the EU, our students first and foremost.
As linguists and researchers into languages, cultures and societies, we believe that a British withdrawal from the European Union would isolate the United Kingdom as a predominantly Anglophone and inward-looking culture. As the Department for Education's own statement of the purpose of language teaching and learning in the English national curriculum states: 'Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures'. The study of languages enables students and academics to understand the similarities and differences between cultures, in the broadest sense of high culture, popular culture and the customs and practices of everyday life. In this sense it is inherently intercultural. Furthermore it enables us to understand ideas and events that cross national boundaries, the current and historical relationships between countries, and the ways in which other countries interact with the UK. In this sense it is transnational.

Language-based studies have long had the tradition of requiring extensive periods of residence in target language countries. The Erasmus+ programme, which extends not only to studying but also to working in other countries, is fundamental to our degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and also facilitates the exchange of staff across borders. While increasing numbers of students and staff are engaging in periods of residence abroad in countries beyond the EU, the facilitation and funding provided by Erasmus+ for what are still the majority of outward mobility experiences for UK students is increasingly essential in an era of high student fees and debt. Furthermore, the Erasmus+ scheme provides funding and opportunities for schools and colleges which are known to be essential in motivating the continuation of language-learning and language studies into Higher Education. At a time when the UK International Unit is spearheading the UK's Outward Mobility Strategy to promote wider take-up of periods of residence abroad embedded within degree programmes in any discipline, accompanied by calls from employers for British graduates to have greater international and cross-cultural profiles, to close the doors on the Erasmus+ scheme would be highly detrimental to all of UK Higher Education.

UK linguists, in common with academics in all other disciplines, benefit massively from EU research funding. We also rely on the close relationships we can build with academics across a vibrant European Higher Education Area in the pursuit of greater cross-cultural understanding and research excellence. We are massively dependent on mother-tongue language teachers and academics who embody the cultures which are our focus of study. While our disciplines do, of course, encompass the study of languages and cultures from all over the world, and we need to attract global talent, from across the EU we face no restrictions on mobility and permissions to work. This is of particular importance in respect of language teachers, both for the HE sector and for our schools.

In our school sector, the study of languages has long been in decline. In spite of new government initiatives across the UK nations, there is a massive anticipated shortage of teachers to deliver the latest goals. Our disciplines from school to HE require us to be able to recruit internationally and EU membership is fundamental to this goal.

In an ever more globalised world of trade, international relations and security concerns, all requiring greater cross-cultural cooperation and communication, the study of languages has never been more important. Leaving the EU, for all its flaws, would further isolate the UK and restrict the opportunities for cross-linguistic and cross-cultural exchange which are vital if an Anglophone nation and its citizens are to participate fully in global society.
